A Web course to Support Corporate Trainers
in Designing Instruction

Welcome!
This Website provides you with a Web-based learning opportunity that will be focused on Instructional Design for Corporate Trainers who have not had formal instructional design training.

As part of our graduate work at University of Connecticut, we are developing a Web-based instructional design tutorial. This tutorial will introduce you to formal instructional design concepts, provide tools for instructional design, and provide some support as you learn. We anticipate the total time to complete the introductory training will be about 4 hours over a two-week period.

The tutorial will be about 2 hours of information. The tutorial will be followed by an activity where you will produce a high-level instructional design document/plan. You will receive feedback/coaching on your plan. We will also ask you to participate in a pre and post assessment. This information will be confidential.

This pilot is to look at a self-directed learning approach to instructional design. We will provide you with Instructional Design content to learn and a series of prompts (questions) to guide you through the learning. You will access the information via the Internet. In this Website, you will find the resources needed to accomplish the project.

In addition, you will have the ability to post and respond to questions through WebBoard (a Web-based bulletin board), access the evaluation tools, you can email the pilot team for help, and post your final plan.

As stated earlier, we anticipate that you will spend no more than 2-3 three hours reviewing the provided information and another 2 hours preparing your instructional design outline and plan. You will be able to do this work any time of the day or night. We do request that it be complete in a two-week period. For planning we offer the following tentative timeline:
  • Week 1: Pre-assessment
  • Week 2: Self-directed learning time & Interactive learning intervention
  • End of Week 2: Post-assessment
  • Now, we would like to ask you take Needs Assessment Questionnaire (pre-assessment).

    First Thing to do...
  • Click the following link to ISD3 WebBoard to login for first time.
  • Once you log in, please post your first message under Greeting section.

  • The high level plan for this work is as follows:
    1. You will fill out a pre-assessment (confidential).
    2. You will be provided a problem statement that will require you to instructionally design a topic.
    3. You will have access to a Website with numerous resources to learn about instructional design.
    4. You will produce a high-level instructional design outline and plan. Additionally, you will write a short explanation of the process you used to produce the outline and plan.
    5. You will take a post assessment (confidential).
    6. You will fill out an evaluation of the learning experience.
    7. We will share the results of the pilot with all participants.

This learning intervention will be a guided tutorial based on two bodies of literature; situated learning and problem-based learning.
  • Situated learning briefly states that learning is situated and the learner needs real-world activities to assure learning.
  • Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach that centers on a real-world problem. PBL suggest that the problem needs to be real to the student and their work. We will use these two theories/concepts to teach Instructional Design.
